Feminism is the advocacy of women's rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men.
Our Purpose
To inform as many girls as possible about the stereotypes surrounding women in the fields of science and technolgy evident in our society, and raise their confidence and interest in going into these fields in the future.
The underlying issue
In today’s society, gender equality has improved massively, yet it is still a pressing issue that needs to be addressed. One of the most prevalent forms of gender inequality that can be easily observed in most communities is in the fields of science and technology. Over the past few decades this has subsided slightly, but there is much more work to be done before equality is reached. Even in our own community one can witness the unbalanced ratio of females to males in many of these fields. It is social stereotypes, and not simply differing interests, that drive women away from such jobs, and men towards them. Many women are likely not even conscious of holding these stereotypes, however they influence their choices and limit what they believe they are capable of. Women are often perceived in the media as teachers, or nurses, rather than scientists or computer programmers. As a result, women seem to be discouraged from pursuing the latter careers. This is a prevalent problem in our larger society, as well as in our very own communities, because it creates a deprivation of girls who want to be involved in these careers.
